The Civil Engineers took over the site of the old steam depot at Westcliffe in 1976. There are old buildings still remaining although some clearance has taken place to allow for the provision of permanent and temporary accommodation for the Engineers.

The track plan was altered to provide 6 storage sidings for the departmental wagons, a reception loop with head shunts and an access down towards the redundant turntable where materials storage facilities are situated.

Opposite the yard there are 2 loops where departmental block trains and weekend only locos can stable. If space is available revenue stock can pause there for passing manoeuvres. Behind them lie 2 private sidings, one for a coal disposal point and the other is a small distribution service.

North West Tar Distilleries is rail fed and takes deliveries of raw materials for their tar works using the reception line. The stone from the quarries used to arrive by the now disused narrow gauge viaduct which snakes its way across the layout.

A few of the structures are from modified kits but mostly scratch built using Slaters, Wills & Ratio plastic parts, Roger Murray Coloured Light Signals are used throughout the layout. Backscene is by Adrian Cox.

Westcliffe requires 3 operators and is 18 ft long on its own.
